Temperature Affects Curing Time

The ideal temperature of a working environment that involves putting down epoxy paint as a concrete floor coating should be warm. Warm temperature helps speeds up the curing process. Cold weather would take longer to cure due to the chemical reaction of epoxy and resins.

This short post is not a technical description on epoxy curing. But in simple explanation during the curing process the epoxy transform from a liquid state to gel to solid state. The time for this cure to take place fully is a week. Getting back to the temperature, in a cold climate this cure time will take longer than a week.

During the stages of curing, obviously in the liquid stage is where you get to work the epoxy. Where as in the gel stage, its getting a little harder to play with. So you need to carefully plan out the work of the application as to where to start and ending point. Sounds like common sense but when its time to do and no plans of execution of the application, you can ruin the application.

So the main factor to move forward with the project is the cure time this is determine by the epoxy open time and overall cure time-hardener cure speed and epoxy temperature.

Each hardeners have specific time to cure, when you choose a hardener, select one that gives you the adequate time for the job and temperature and working conditions that you are under. Heat is another factor but within heat is determined by the ambient temperature and exothermic heat. Bottom line is the warmer the temperature the faster the cure of your concrete epoxy.

Epoxy Paint For Pools

If you're thinking of re-coating your pool, we recommend you use a mono epoxy concrete floor coating. Mono epoxy is a very high solid content so it will require thinning in cold or hot weather. This epoxy paint is a new generation paint that can be used for pond and pool that produces exceptionally hard surface without the hassle of mixing multiple components together.

If your pool has the old paint on, you must remove it. Here are easy steps to follow:
  • Use paint stripper
  • Power wash & Make Repairs if needed
  • Use Etching Cleaner
  • Once dry apply 1 coat of an epoxy primer & 2 coats of a mono epoxy paint coat
Best results & recommendation is to apply 2 coats of a mono epoxy TS-730. Any questions leave a comment or email.

Protect Your Concrete Floor

Protecting your garage and basement concrete floors with an epoxy coating is ideal. Without a protective coat your concrete floor will crack, chip, and stain over time. Get yourself an epoxy concrete floor coating and protect your investment to prolong the life of your concrete garage/basement floors.

Application
There are many applications with an epoxy, you can apply to a new floor, or fill in chips and cracks on old floors. Epoxy comes as a primer and top coat. Epoxy floor coating is resistant to automobile fluids and chemicals.

A concrete floor urethane sealer can also be used. Urethane sealers are high-gloss. They also involve putting down a primer and a topcoat. The topcoat is clear, but pigment may be added. Urethane sealers are often used in retail stores and show rooms.

There are other type of floor coats that you can try, but we (Top Secret Coatings) advise that you stick with an epoxy floor coating.

Prep Work For Epoxy Floor Coatings

Putting on epoxy coating to concrete floor is similar to putting paint on a wall. The work is in the preparation. Choose the color and having all your tools lined up can make things go smoothly.

To bond well, epoxy requires an even semi rough clean surface. Means patching any potholes and cracks and allowing them to cure fully. You can tell if your floor already has a sealer if water beads on it.

Stripping the floor, does not clean well. Any grease or dirt will compromise the epoxy adhesion, so cleaning and etching is a step that should not be rushed. Chemical cleaners vary widely, from harsh degrease and etchers to safer but less effective organics. You can cut down on the elbow grease by renting a machine called a floor maintainer for about $40 a day.

Once the floor is clean and ready for its coating, it all comes down to timing. Choose a day to do the work when the concrete won't be damp from wet weather and when the temperature is between 50 to 80 degrees; otherwise the application can bubble and peel.

Once you mix the epoxy paint and hardener, you have about 2 hours to work with, so you'll need to plan out in advance how best to paint yourself out of the garage, starting from the back corner. The hardest part is waiting, the typical drying time averages between 12 to 24 hours. Once the whole floor is done, you still have to hold off parking the car on it for another 72 hours, but in all its worth the wait!
